The 2027 New Jersey GST Bridge Competition stands for the Garden State Truss Bridge Competition, a statewide structural engineering competition created for New Jersey high school students.
Led by Ryan Li, our team is made up of college students from different universities who came together because of a shared interest in STEM outreach, engineering, and creating meaningful academic competitions for students across New Jersey.
Our team, previously seniors in high school, founded and hosted the 2026 New Jersey Statewide High School Integration Bee at Raritan Valley Community College, which brought together students from across the state for a fast-paced calculus competition and was a tremendous success. Building on that momentum, GST was inspired by a bridge-building competition first organized by Ryan at Bridgewater-Raritan High School in September 2025. After seeing how much excitement a hands-on engineering event could create, we realized there still wasn't a dedicated statewide bridge competition in New Jersey focused on wood structural design.
So we decided to build one.
Our goal is to create a competition where students can design, build, and test basswood truss bridges in a true head-to-head setting while also connecting with students from across the state who share the same interest in engineering.
This is only the start. We hope GST becomes the first of many statewide STEM competitions and helps build a stronger tradition of student-led academic events in New Jersey.

Ryan founded the Mu Alpha Theta Math Honor Society at BRHS in February 2025, where he helped organize several academic events, including the 2025 Integration Bee and a popsicle stick bridge competition. Both events had strong student participation and good engagement.
In 2026, Ryan expanded these efforts beyond the club structure by organizing the NJ Statewide Integration Bee in collaboration with Raritan Valley Community College and faculty members. The event brought together students from seven schools, with over 40 participants and contributors and around 20 competitors, significantly increasing its scale.
Building on these experiences, Ryan developed the 2027 NJ GST Bridge Competition. Unlike earlier Integration Bee events focused mainly on calculus-based problem solving, this competition is designed to be more accessible to a wider range of high school students. It builds on earlier bridge-building initiatives with the goal of creating a larger, more inclusive statewide engineering event that promotes hands-on learning in structural design, teamwork, and problem-solving.
At UIUC, he plans to study civil engineering and further develop his knowledge in structural engineering, with an interest in transportation engineering as a potential minor.

The inaugural BRHS Integration Bee took place at Bridgewater-Raritan High School over three days. Calculus students from across the region competed in a fast-paced integration challenge, building friendships and sharpening their mathematical skills. It set the foundation for future events.

As a stepping stone between the Integration Bee and the GST Bridge Competition, we ran a popsicle stick bridge competition at BRHS. Teams designed and built popsicle-stick bridges that were then load-tested for fun and prizes. It was a great low-stakes way to test our bridge-competition model in front of a live audience before scaling up.

Volunteers and organizers arrive to set up the venue, prepare materials, arrange testing stations, and distribute team workspaces. The materials marketplace is stocked and the bank is opened.
Teams begin arriving for check-in. Each team receives their workspace assignment, budget envelope ($1500 GSTC), and a submission worksheet. Consent forms are collected and verified.
Introduction of guests including the principal, school leadership, or other dignitaries. A formal kickoff frames the competition for students and parents in attendance, followed by a brief overview of the day's events, rules, and safety guidelines. Teams set up at their assigned stations.
The build phase opens with a 20-minute Design Phase where teams plan their bridge and purchase materials at "before building" prices. Once 20 minutes elapse, "while building" pricing (approximately 130% of before-building cost) takes effect. Teams construct their bridges using only purchased basswood, CA glue, and approved tools.
Build phase ends. All teams submit their worksheets (estimated load, predicted failure mode, bridge description). A free dinner is served to all competitors, staff, and volunteers. A group photo is taken and a small show or activity runs during the break. Judges evaluate bridges and record remaining budgets.
Teams are called up in random order for load testing. Each bridge is loaded using a bucket-and-sand system (or equivalent incremental method) until failure (2" maximum vertical deflection or structural member/joint failure) or until the load reaches 200 lbs. Each test takes approximately 3–7 minutes. Safety glasses are required during all testing.
Final scores are tallied. Winners are announced across all categories — Overall Placement (1st, 2nd, 3rd) and Special Category Awards (Highest Strength, Structural Efficiency, Cost Efficiency, Best Aesthetics, Best Load Prediction). Prizes, certificates, and trophies are awarded. An after-competition Q&A session is held.
Volunteers and organizers clean up the venue. All borrowed tools and materials are returned. The competition officially concludes.

One of the most important considerations in civil engineering is cost. Engineers must design with efficiency in mind, since both overbuilding and underbuilding can create problems. In this competition, each team receives an initial budget of $1500 GSTC (Garden State Truss Currency) to purchase materials and tools.
Material prices increase by ~130% once building begins, and there are bulk discounts available on basswood strips. Teams have exactly 20 minutes to make purchasing decisions before the "while building" pricing takes effect. Unused budget remaining at the end contributes to the team's final score.

Official Rules and Contestant Handbook
In this competition, teams will design and build a bridge using basswood. The event is intended to test a range of skills, including technical design, efficiency, cost management, accuracy of predictions, and the ability to work within time and size constraints.
Each team will be given a budget of $1500 GSTC to "purchase" materials for their bridge design. This introduces an additional layer of strategy, as teams must balance structural performance with material cost and efficiency.
At the end of the competition, bridges will be load tested until failure to determine their maximum load capacity. This value makes up a significant portion of the total score.
The construction phase runs from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM and is divided into two parts:
Once materials are purchased, they are considered final and may not be refunded or exchanged (except for defective materials approved by judges).
Teams will be called up in random order for testing. Each test takes approximately 3-7 minutes per bridge.
Each team receives a worksheet to complete during the competition. It must be filled out before the end of the building phase:
After submission, teams may leave for dinner while judges evaluate bridges, record remaining budget, and complete scoring. No modifications may be made after the building period ends.
All dimensions measured at the widest, tallest, and longest points of the bridge. No maximum weight is specified.
A 3" x 3" x 3" clearance cube must be able to pass through the full length of the bridge without obstruction. A continuous roadway deck is not required, but the center of the span must provide a stable load-bearing surface.
The bridge must rest only on the provided supports at each end. No abutments, anchors, or additional support structures may be used. The contact must be purely vertical - the bridge may not exert horizontal forces on the supports beyond friction.
Allowed: Cut/notched to any angle, sanded, bent using water only, marked with pencils/pens, decorated with colored pencils/markers.
Not Allowed: Soaked/coated/treated with anything other than water, impregnated/reinforced/hardened using adhesives or external substances beyond normal joint bonding.
A team's final score is based on five categories, each worth up to 20 points, for a maximum of 100 points:
Based on maximum load the bridge supports before failure. Rises quickly at lower loads then levels off due to diminishing returns.
Ratio of load carried to bridge weight. Lower bridge weight has a stronger effect on increasing the score than increasing load.
Performance vs. cost. Cheaper builds score higher when they achieve similar strength. Rewards budget management.
How close your predicted load is to actual. Symmetric - over-predicting by 50 lbs hurts as much as under-predicting by 50 lbs.
Four subcategories (0-5 each): Craftsmanship, Design Intention, Symmetry & Balance, Overall Visual Impression.
The best strategy is to balance performance across all five categories rather than overemphasizing any single one.
In the event of a tie in total overall score, rankings are determined in this order:
If a tie remains, teams will be declared co-winners for Overall Placement Awards.
Given to the teams with the highest total scores across all five categories. Prizes listed per team — with 2 members, each contestant takes home a meaningful share.
Beyond the overall podium, two additional category awards recognize outstanding bridges in specific dimensions of design.
Every team that competes walks away with something. All participating teams that have not earned an award above will receive a certificate recognizing their completion of the competition.
Each team receives $1500 GSTC (Garden State Truss Currency) to purchase materials. The currency used is not real money. All listed materials are optional to purchase and use in the construction of the bridge.
The "While Building" cost is approximately 130% of the "Before Building" cost, reflecting the increased expense of in-competition purchasing. There is also up to a 15% bulk discount on basswood strips, allowing teams to purchase 30 strips (instead of 10) at a cheaper per-strip price. However, teams must determine if they are willing to commit to buying in bulk and are encouraged to plan ahead.
Teams will have exactly 20 minutes to make purchasing decisions before the while-building pricing takes effect. If a team has not placed any material orders after 20 minutes, the pricing will automatically switch to during-building pricing regardless of design progress.

Tools used during construction must not be part of the final bridge. All listed tools are optional to purchase and use to assist in bridge construction.

At any point during the competition, teams may exchange larger bills for smaller ones or combine smaller bills into larger ones. This is the only function of the competition bank. The bank does not provide any additional services, such as loans, investments, interest, or taxes. It is strictly used for changing bill denominations.
For example, a team may exchange one $100 GSTC bill for five $20 GSTC bills if needed to purchase smaller items at the Materials Marketplace.

Penalties are determined by judges based on severity, with final authority resting with them. All penalties are deducted from the final score.
Given for minor issues or small rule deviations that must be corrected. Teams may be asked to adjust their bridge. Most teams will receive a warning before any penalty.
Applies to more serious rule breaches affecting fairness or structural integrity. 15% deduction from final score.
Severe violations: interfering with other teams, intentional rule exploitation, fundamentally invalid construction, or dangerous safety breaches.
All competitors must submit a signed consent form acknowledging liability, the code of conduct, and related competition policies. If a competitor is under 18 years old on March 20, 2027, a parent or guardian signature is also required.
The competition will be professionally filmed and photographed. Each bridge will be photographed and uploaded to the website. To consent to being included in photos or videos, you must complete the required waiver forms.
External references, prior designs, or pre-made structural templates are not permitted during construction or testing. Personal electronic devices may only be used for basic utility functions (timekeeping, simple calculations). Devices may not be used to search for bridge designs, construction methods, or engineering guidance.
Teams are encouraged to research and prepare a design strategy before competition day.
